LÖFFLER- SYNDROME: A NECESSARY ALERT IN LYMPHATIC FILARIASIS ENDEMIC AREA (REVIEW).

Anais da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco , 40 (1): 6-13, 1995. (Portuguese)

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this paper was to review the importance of Löfller Syndrome (LS) in bancroftian endemic area. An overall consideration is done about the etiological, immunological and pathological aspects including differential diagnosis with filarial tropical pulmonary eosinophilia-TPE and tropical pulmonary eosinophilia-like-TPE-like, similar to LS due probably to intestinal helminths as Ascaris, Strongyloides and Hookworms. Attention is paid to: stress the lack of association between filariasis (either microfilaria and/or adult worm carriers in acute or chronic stages except in TPE picture) and Hypereosinophilia. They alert that indirect immunofluorescence test, still widely used in our area, has absolutely no value for diagnosis in bancroftian filariasis. Indeed, for this disease immunodiagnosis is not yet accessible for routine diagnosis and still a subject of research.
